InterNations - Los Angeles

Mayte Barahona and Nancy Young are the friendly and inviting LA Ambassadors who run the Community events. The tend to alternate between dinners at interesting establishments and cocktails at upscale hotels. There are commonly 30-40 attendees at each event, and the age averages in the low 30's. True to the InterNations mission, the attendees are essentially all expats and a few locals with international experience or otherwise those with "global minds" (which includes me, I suppose).

NetWalkers & Co. (Troop 90210)

The kick-off event last Wed went well. Despite threatening weather, five of us had a brisk nearly 3mi round-trip walk down the beautiful Beverly Gardens Park along Santa Monica Blvd. Congenial conversation ensued intermixed with Ellen, the hostess, delighting us with factoids about the park and surrounding areas. We were back in an hour. Attire was exercise-ish; dress in layers as you will warm up.

Ignite/LA

I attended the 3/1/10 LA event held in the theater area in the back of Cinespace - it's a in a dinner-theater seating style. Local parking in Hollywood is always expensive; I paid $8 - the Cinespace valet is at the west corner of the block on Hollywood. With your printed ticket, security at the entrance would let you past the rope and up the stairs you needed to wind your way back to the theater. Just outside was a small table with name tags but no greeter.

Self Description

5 Minutes. 20 Slides. 15 Seconds per Slide. Speakers get only 5 minutes to give an amazing, inspiring talk. In LA, there are tons of different communities at the intersection of tech, art, green/sustainability, unique lifestyle design, digital/collaborative media, and social action that don't know each other but should. Think of Ignite as a set of trailers for exciting projects people are doing that you should know about.

Choice Career Fairs

I arriving at noon at their 2/11/10 LA event, which was scheduled from 10:30a to 2p at the LA Convention Center. With no greater detail provided, I eventually determined that I could park at the South Hall; parking was a steep $12 but I noticed $8-$9 lots across the street. Once inside it was difficult to determine that it was being held in a Concourse meeting room. Read more about Choice Career Fairs »

MixXedin Professional Network

Tiffany Bradshaw is the affable host of these events, who takes a individual interest in those at her events. When you arrive, she leads each new attendee to a few others and introduces them, and continues to connect people throughout the event. As a whole the attendees are diverse in their fields and some of the friendliest I have encountered. Her last event I attended in December was also well attended, with approximately 60-something people.

Criterion Resources

I attended their joint evening networking event with Pink Slip Mixers on 12/8 which was attended by about two dozen people, and included light food and soft drinks. Earlier that day they held a "Job Seeker Seminar & Fundraiser for Penny Lane Centers". I was told it was quite good as they had a number of speakers on different topics. They had a raffle. Attire was business casual and up.

Jobnob

Jobnob isn't just an events, it's an online community where you can "Search for companies, jobs/projects or people". I attended last week's event in LA in conjunction with Docstoc (also in my list). This was their first in LA but have organized eight in SF. The venue was what I like to call "standing-still room only" packed! Upon arriving you received a name tag and four pages of companies in attendance, with a description of their projects and the skills they are looking for.

Self Description

Jobnob was founded to empower employees with real information about jobs and companies. The internet helps you find great bargains and the best restaurants, but offers nothing about the best place to work or where to earn the most money. Our mission at Jobnob is to answer the burning questions we all have about jobs.

New Media Vault

The telling part of my first New Media Vault event, their "1 Year Anniversary Bash" at their new home at the Standard Downtown, was [when] a guy in the elevator asks me "Are you webisode production, or talent?" - I had no idea really how to answer. [Later] I found myself talking to some video interviewers who wanted me to discuss my involvement in or appreciation of webisodes. I think it was then I first misspoke "webinar" for "webisode", a mistake I would instinctively make a few times that evening. The attendees were definitely new media/entertainment types. The youngish crowd (and varied upwards quite a bit) was dressed from funky punk/CGBG t-shirts to guys with suits and ties.

(ExecTec) Executive Networking & Technology Group of LA

Each dinner has a different topic and "everyone participates in a round table discussion." I've attended three of them now. While there was only three of us the first time, there were nearly twenty another. While Joel Ordesky, the organizer, introduces the topic and generally keeps things moving, the conversation was unstructured. It lasts for about 2 hrs. This isn't the standard meet-as-many-people-as-you-can networking event; it's about deep biz/tec conversations and making good connections. Dress is business casual. Recommended.
