When you Wish upon a Job

It makes a difference what you do.

Did you see the Leonid Meteor Shower earlier this week? First you had to know about it. Second, you either had to stay up past midnight (PST) or get up before dawn. Then, you had to find a clear view of the sky, without a lot of light pollution, and let your eyes adjust to the darkness. And it was best if you knew to look to the Northeast part of the sky.

How do you get to 500+ LinkedIn connections? (Without being a LION?)

If you're a recruiter or otherwise have an opportunity for me then the "If you’d like to connect with me..." portion below doesn't apply... just say so! (updated 10/20/09)

I was recently asked how I reached “500+” connections. Interesting question, since I'm not an "open" networker (LION = LinkedIn Open Networker).

I've been on for only a couple years (since July 2007, Discover your LinkedIn Start Date… ) but kept good track of my contacts prior.

See below on how to initially populate your LinkedIn Contacts. Read more about How do you get to 500+ LinkedIn connections? (Without being a LION?) »

Acing the Interview: Fit, Passion, and then Ability?

I recently spoke with someone who had been through an extended period of unemployment and many, many interviews. He had some insightful advice on the deciding factors that lead to a “yes” once you managed to secure an interview. While I didn’t find these three factors surprising, the weight of each I did:

  • “Fit” 50% – in the culture of the company, division, department, and of course, with the manager.
  • “Passion” 40% – for the industry, the company, the job.
  • “Ability” 10% – to do the job.

Are you surprised?
